JOYAL,  THE CANADIAN

A bold portrait of an atypical politician, nationalist and federalist, lover of culture, champion of collective memory and individual freedoms. Serge Joyal established the Joliette Art Museum at the age of 22, took the government of P.E. Trudeau to court, and contested the mayoralty of Montreal against Jean Drapeau in 1978. As a minister and senator, he defends the rights of minorities against the prejudices of the majority. At a time when Canada is threatened with becoming the 51st American state, he defends the humanist societal model he has helped to build.

Filmed over five years in Canada, France, and the United States,JOYAL is a baroque and lush film, much like its subject --a fireworks display where art, history, and politics intertwine.
